Treating Adolescent OCD with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Pending

Teen OCD TMS study

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is FDA-approved for treatment resistant  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in adults, but data on TMS in teens with OCD does not exist.

This is a pilot study to examine the tolerability, safety and early efficacy of a form of TMS for treating adolescents with OCD who have experienced partial or no response to 1st line evidence-based treatments of medication and/or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), defined as treatment resistant.

Another aim of the study is to identify neuroimaging biomarkers associated with OCD TMS treatment response. Repeat MRI scanning pre- and post-TMS will examine relationships between brain activity, OCD and treatment response.

This project’s goal is to examine whether open-label treatment with TMS administered to two randomly assigned stimulation sites shows acceptable tolerability, safety, and preliminary signals of efficacy in adolescents with OCD. Baseline and pre- versus post-TMS changes in MRI functional connectivity will be explored to potentially identify predictors of TMS treatment response and mechanisms of TMS-associated treatment effects.
